What are food contact materials?
Food contact materials (FCMs) are materials that come into direct or indirect contact with food during processing, packaging, storage, or consumption. This includes packaging materials, containers, utensils, and equipment used in the food industry.
If the ink printing materials on the surfaces of personal care products, food packaging, and beverage containers are not sufficiently safe, there is a risk of migration and permeation, where the ink components can transfer and be absorbed by the human body, posing a potential health hazard. Therefore, the use of safe printing materials is of utmost importance.
Food-grade contact materials need to comply with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and the requirements set by EuPIA (European Printing Ink Association). These standards ensure that the ink materials meet the necessary safety and hygiene standards for food contact applications.
Marabu systematically adheres to GMP and the requirements of the European Printing Ink Association for printing inks used on food contact materials. There is an increasing demand for cosmetic packaging to comply with the safety regulations for food contact materials.
